I’ve been watching this problem escalate in real time. Last month, a client came in for mixing sessions and discovered three fake singles under their name on Spotify — all AI-generated garbage with their artist image and bio. The music was plausible enough to fool casual listeners, and the revenue split was going somewhere else entirely. Spotify’s support response time? Three weeks to remove them.

This new Artist Profile Protection feature is the first platform-level acknowledgment that AI music fraud is a real, immediate threat to working artists. But it’s also just the beginning of what needs to happen.

What Spotify Got Right

The manual approval gate is the correct first move. No algorithm, no matter how sophisticated, can reliably distinguish between an artist’s legitimate new direction and an AI attempting to sound like them. The only person who knows whether a release is real is the artist themselves.

From a practical standpoint, this solves the most obvious exploit: someone uploads a track, associates it with your verified artist profile, and starts collecting streams under your name. That scenario was absurdly easy to execute before this feature. Distribution aggregators have weak verification, and once something’s live, the damage is already done.

I’ve advised clients for months to monitor their profiles obsessively. Check weekly. Screenshot your catalog. Now there’s actually a mechanism to prevent the problem rather than just react to it. That matters.

The feature also acknowledges something the AI-is-just-a-tool crowd keeps missing: authenticity has economic value. When a fake release dilutes your brand or confuses your audience about what you actually sound like, it’s not just an aesthetic problem. It’s revenue loss, audience confusion, and career damage.

The Limitations Are Significant

Manual approval only works if you’re already a verified artist on Spotify. If you’re emerging, building an audience, or haven’t hit whatever threshold Spotify uses for verification, you’re still exposed. The artists who most need protection — those without established presence or label backing — don’t get the tool.

It also doesn’t address the broader AI music problem. Someone can still create a fake artist profile that sounds like you without directly using your name. They can generate entire catalogs in your style, flood playlists with algorithmic soundalikes, and siphon off your audience. Spotify’s feature stops direct impersonation but not stylistic theft or market saturation.

And there’s this: approval only happens if you’re actively monitoring your account. Miss the notification, and a fake release could sit there for days or weeks before you notice. That’s still a problem for artists juggling multiple projects, touring, or not checking their Spotify for Artists dashboard religiously.

What Artists Actually Need to Do

First, enable this feature the moment it’s available to you. There is no downside. Manual approval is a minor friction point compared to dealing with fraudulent releases after the fact.

Second, document everything. Keep a catalog of your releases — titles, ISRCs, distribution dates. When we master a track here at the studio, I tell clients to save a reference file with metadata intact. If a dispute happens, you need proof of what’s actually yours.

Third, understand your distribution chain. Most artists use aggregators like DistroKid, TuneCore, or CD Baby. Know what verification they require and whether they have their own anti-fraud measures. Some are better than others. Some are barely checking anything.

Fourth, monitor your profiles across all platforms, not just Spotify. Apple Music, YouTube Music, Tidal — fake releases can appear anywhere. Set calendar reminders if you have to. Make it part of your release routine.

What Studios Can Actually Do

The Bigger Picture: Platforms Need to Do More

Spotify’s feature is reactive — it stops fakes from appearing on verified profiles. What we actually need is proactive fraud detection across the entire platform. If someone uploads a track that’s algorithmically similar to an existing artist, flag it for review. If metadata patterns match known fraud behavior, hold the release.

Verification should be easier and faster for legitimate independent artists. Right now, the barrier to verification creates a two-tier system where established acts get protection and emerging artists don’t. That’s backwards.

And there needs to be real consequences for distributors who enable fraud, either through negligence or intentional lack of oversight. If an aggregator consistently pushes fraudulent content, they should lose platform access. The current system treats distributors as neutral pipes, but they’re not. They’re gatekeepers, and they need to act like it.

Where AI Actually Helps

The irony is that AI could solve some of this. Audio fingerprinting and style matching algorithms can identify when a release sounds suspiciously similar to an existing artist. Metadata analysis can flag patterns consistent with impersonation. Natural language processing can detect when bio text or promotional copy is suspiciously generic or scraped.

Spotify has the data and the engineering resources to build those systems. They should. Because manual approval by artists is a necessary measure, but it’s not sufficient. The scale of the problem requires automated defenses too.

Final Thought

Spotify’s Artist Profile Protection feature is a real step forward. It gives working artists a tool we desperately needed. But it’s not a complete solution, and artists who assume they’re now fully protected will get burned.

The music industry is entering a phase where proving authenticity matters as much as the music itself. That means documentation, vigilance, and working with people who understand both the creative and technical sides of this problem.

If you’re releasing music, treat fraud prevention as part of your release strategy, not an afterthought. Enable every protection tool available. Monitor your profiles. Keep records. And work with studios and distributors who take this seriously.

Because the AI fakes aren’t going away. The only question is whether we build the systems to defend against them before they do permanent damage to independent artists.
